WHERE TO DONATE (OR REPAIR) OLD FURNITURE IN TARRYTOWN

DO YOU HAVE FURNITURE YOU NO LONGER NEED?

DON’T AUTOMATICALLY TRASH IT.

In the Village of Tarrytown, there are a few different ways to either repair or recycle (donate) your old furniture.

DONATE IT

One of the best ways is to simply make a neighborly donation, using the Facebook page “10591”, a terrific local resource. Simply photograph your item(s), then post a “Curb Alert” on the page, so residents can see that you have something free to pick up. Place your item on the curb; just make sure it doesn’t stay there if you don’t have any takers.

Large furniture can be a pain to get rid of, but if you plan ahead, you can schedule a pick-up with a number of local organizations. Scheduling can be done online. Note: These organizations are incredibly busy, and they are often scheduling pick-ups two months out.

The local organizations who offer pick-up service are:

  • Salvation Army. Schedule a pick-up online here. Pick-ups are scheduled two months in advance.
  • Goodwill does not accept furniture.
  • Vietnam Veterans of America picks up small furniture only (must be able to be lifted by a single person). So, no couches or loveseats! Schedule a pickup here.

You can also donate your gently-used furniture to Furniture Sharehouse. This “furniture bank” provides basic home furniture, free of charge, to Westchester families who can’t afford a bed or a table. They work with local agencies to identify families moving out of homeless shelters, escaping domestic violence or recovering from personal or natural disasters. They accept drop-offs, schedule pick-ups, and will give you a tax receipt. Follow their Donation Guidelines.

 REPAIR IT

Not everything that’s broken needs to be thrown away!

If you have antique, vintage or wood furniture in need of repair, try Tarrytown Woodworks. At their 6 South Washington Street studio, right in downtown Tarrytown, Eric has been repairing fine furniture for 30 years. Phone: (914) 332-4189.
