NEW LED STREETLIGHTS FOR TARRYTOWN AND GREENBURGH SAVE MONEY AND ENERGY

Have you noticed the change in our streetlamps?

Next time you’re on Broadway at night, look into the old-style streetlamps — the old gaslights — that line the sidewalks.

You’ll notice that it’s not the bulbs themselves that are lit. The light is actually coming from LED panels installed above those old light bulbs. The light is clearer and whiter than the old sodium lights.

In 2016, the Town of Greenburgh began retrofitting its streetlights with more efficient LED lights. This measure, tested for several years with a pilot program, would save energy and control costs, because LED lights use less electricity than older-style sodium lights and “cobrahead” mercury vapor lights that have been in place in Tarrytown and throughout Greenburgh.

This luminaire conversion program continues. New LED lights being installed throughout Tarrytown. In Greenburgh, the effort has reduced the town’s energy usage on streetlights by 61%, or 1.5 million kilowatt hours. Greenburgh predicts an annual savings of $345,000 in energy costs. The energy savings will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,035 metric tons per year.

Streetlamps, decorated with wreaths for Christmas, are undergoing a conversion, from older-style sodium lights to new LED lights. There is no change to the outer appearance of the light fixtures.
